This manual will guide you through the process of REFPROP installation. By the end of this process you should be able to call REFPROP functions from within MS Excel. If you already have REFPROP installed and it works with Excel (i.e. you can put something like
=Density('air','PT','SI',0.101325,300) in excel spreadsheet and the function will return the result), you can completely ignore this manual.
Install REFPROP using the setup launcher with default settings.
Download and execute batch command file corresponding to your version of operating system (32-bit or 64-bit) from this zip-archive (link). If you have both
C:\Program Files and
C:\Program Files (x86) folders on your computer, you have 64 bit version. If you have only
C:\Program Files folder, your version is 32-bit. Windows XP is usually 32-bit, Windows 7 and Windows 8 are usually 64-bit.
You may have a warning that the file could be dangerous because it contains executable batch files. If you don't trust me (and probably you shouldn't) you can add the following paths to your environment variables manually. To do this, follow the steps:
Control Panel, switch to
Classic Viewin Windows XP or to
View by Small iconsin Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Advanced system settings.
Add the following variables to your
User variables section:
|variable||path (Windows 32-bit)||path (Windows 64-bit)|
If you already have
path variable in your
User variables section, simply add an extra path to the end of the line separated by semi-colon sign, i.e.
C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Program Files (x86)\REFPROP
REFPROP.xls file from default REFPROP installation directory (
C:\Program Files\REFPROP\ for Windows 32-bit,
C:\Program Files (x86)\REFPROP\ for Windows 64-bit).
Go to the
File/Save As… option in Excel and select
Microsoft Office Excel Add-In under the
Save as type section. This will change the extension to
.XLAM. If the default filename becomes
Copy of REFPROP.xlam change it to
REFPROP.xlam. Save the file as
REFPROP.xlam simply clicking to the
Save button. Don't change the directory, keep a default path.
Add-Ins tab and click to the
In Add-Ins window put a checkmark next to
REFPROP AddIns and click
To verify that you are done with REFPROP installation, open a new Excel document and type
=density("air","PT","SI",0.1,300) in any cell (or just copy-paste that).
If everything is OK you should see
1.161299 value when you press ENTER key. The value shows density of air in
0.1MPa pressure and
